Mayors, County Executives call for a federal effort to coordinate purchasing and distribution of medical equipment during the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis

Health experts say we don’t have enough ventilators--machines used to help people struggling to breathe--to treat the projected number of COVID-19 patients. Also, there's no coordination, so states are fighting with each other over supplies, and hospitals aren't getting what they need. That's why U.S. PIRG is gathering support from mayors and county executives across the country calling for the Trump Administration to use its emergency powers to double the ventilator supply and to centrally distribute those materials, along with other critical medical supplies like masks and gloves.

Leading Groups Send Criteria for Evaluating VW Settlement

The letter highlights six main criteria by which a proposal should be evaluated to compensate consumers and the environment and deter future criminal acts. Four leading consumer, environmental, and public health organizations wrote an open letter in advance of the April 21st deadline set by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer for a proposal that deals with Volkswagen’s emission scandal.

Letter: Protecting the FTC from Special Interest Attacks

While much of our work has been in defense of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), we also support the efforts of the over-100 year old Federal Trade Commission. Recently, powerful special interests convinced the Energy and Commerce Committee to draft (and expect it to vote out soon, likely next week) legislation to severely weaken the FTC's ability to protect the public from identity theft and privacy invasions (including sloppy data security that leads to identity theft), deceptive health marketing claims by sellers of various dangerous or ineffective (or both) products and numerous other last-dollar and other frauds and schemes. We've joined over 30 leading groups in a letter opposing the so-called FTC Process and Transparency Reform Act of 2016 (HR 5510-Burgess (TX)).

Health Professionals Call for Federal Coordination on Medical Supplies and Comprehensive Testing

Centralized, federal leadership is necessary for the efficient purchase and distribution of medical equipment, including personal protective equipment, ventilators, and testing resources. Health professionals across the country are urging the Trump Administration to set up comprehensive testing infrastructure, and ensure that health care workers get critical medical supplies that they need to protect themselves and care for COVID-19 patients.
