“Connecting Miami” widening project makes national list of highway boondoggles

In Miami, highways slice through almost every section of the city, separating neighborhoods and creating sprawl that threatens the surrounding environment. According to a new report from U.S. PIRG Education Fund and Frontier Group, Miami is undertaking a five-year, nearly billion-dollar project to rebuild and add capacity to large sections of I-395 and SR-836 in Overtown, which would exacerbate the problems with urban sprawl and an over dependence on cars.

New report provides best practices for composting waste

Composting all organic waste -- including food scraps and yard trimmings -- could eliminate nearly one-third of all materials sent to landfills and trash incinerators across the United States. That’s according to Composting in America, a new report released today by U.S. PIRG Education Fund, Environment America Research and Policy Center and Frontier Group. The study outlines best practices for composting programs, which are critical for mitigating the negative impact of waste on the climate and public health.

Hurricane season coverage: Data, resources and interview opportunities

The 2019 hurricane season officially gets underway tomorrow (June 1) with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting between 4 and 8 hurricanes this year.
