Dear Florida PIRG member, For decades, Florida PIRG has fought to protect citizens’ voice on public policy by aggressively protecting the citizens’ ballot initiative process. We have kept up this fight since the citizens’ ballot initiative process is the only way in Florida that citizens can have a direct impact on a specific issue. The initiative process is a critical check on a political process. That’s why the most powerful industry lobbyists in the state and their friends in the Legislature pursue legislation each year aimed at shutting it down. During the 2008 legislative session, we worked with allies to defeat a bill that would have made the process more cumbersome by requiring that people who gather signatures go through a level-2 criminal background check—something our state does not even require of daycare workers. While voters are going to see a long list of ballot questions in November, keep in mind that only one of those made it on the ballot via citizens’ initiative. You should have a voice, and Florida PIRG will continue to fight for it. Sincerely, Brad Ashwell |
