Last night, on a 32-30 bipartisan vote, the House Armed Services Committee supported the Tammy Duckworth (IL) amendment to strike language from the National Defense Authorization Act that would have delayed Pentagon-proposed improvements to the Military Lending Act of 2007. It's a critical victory for servicemembers, veterans and their families, although the fight to protect our troops from high-cost loans will continue.

Consumer Advocates Call on Governor to Veto Double Rent Bill

Legislation headed for Governor Crist’s desk would hit renters hard with exorbitant fees and place dwindling affordable housing out of reach for many renters. Statewide organizations representing tenants and consumers say that the Governor, a renter himself, should veto this bill to protect tenants who would have to pay an extra penalty equaling up to two months rent, in addition to any unpaid rent, or other fees if they leave a lease due to unforeseen circumstances.

Exposure to dangerous toxic pollution from industrial facilities threatens communities all across Florida, according to a new report. The report, Toxic Pollution and Health, uses information from the federal Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) to analyze toxic pollution linked to serious health problems such as cancer, birth defects or neurological damage. Due to a recent EPA action restricting the public’s right to know, today’s report may provide one of the last complete pictures of toxic pollution in Florida.
