Save Our Shores

Overview | Fact Sheet | Maps |

What's New
A combination of rising energy prices, election year politics, intense political pressure from pro-drilling states, and a "drain America first" energy policy promoted by President Bush's administration has, for the first time in over a decade, fractionalized Florida's united front against drilling. Incredibly, some members of our congressional delegation have supported legislation that would undermine Florida's existing protections, including a bill by Califorinia Congressman Richard Pombo that would repeal the moratorium against new drilling leases off Florida's coast that has been in place since the 1980s.

This summer, Florida PIRG's Save Our Shores Campaign will be launching a massive grassroots campaign across the state to re-unite the Florida Congressional Delegation in opposition to drilling.

Brief Summary
The oil lobby would like us to believe that after Katrina and Rita, we can drill our way out of our nation's energy problems. We're not buying it. Opening our shores to drilling would only put our beaches and coastal waters at great risk for a small, short-term supply of oil and gas. Routine drilling operations dump thousands of pounds of toxic chemicals into the marine environment and a catastrophic spill— one that could spoil the ecology and economic value of Florida beaches for generations—is a real possibility. We can do better.

For example, if our cars and trucks got an average of a couple more miles per gallon, we’d save more oil than exists off the entire coast of Florida. Yet federal gas mileage standards haven’t significantly changed in 20 years. Instead of allowing oil companies to drill off our coast, our governor and congressional delegation should be leading the fight in Washington and in Tallahassee for better gas mileage and clean energy.
